Impeachment Polls Not Good for Trump

Trump Impeachment PollingCNN recently did an analysis and comparison of polling results on the subject of impeachment between Trump, Clinton, and Nixon. The findings were not helpful to Trump.

Some commentators use the Clinton impeachment as a comparison to our current situation. While it is closer in time to today, the substance and the degree of cover-up of the offense is much different. So I dismiss comparisons to the Clinton impeachment but see the Nixon drama being duplicated in many aspects of Trump’s case.

At a similar point in the impeachment process, the public is less supportive of Trump than they were if Nixon. When the House voted to start an impeachment inquiry into Nixon after the celebrated Saturday night massacre, according to a Gallup poll, only 38% felt Nixon should be impeached and removed from office while 53% said he shouldn’t. A few weeks later a Harris poll showed support for impeaching and removal at 43% with 41% against. This is after months of televised senate hearings.

Today, Trump’s numbers for removal are already that high with 46% approving impeachment while the Ukrainian scandal is less than two weeks old and there has been no public hearings have been conducted. We often forget that it wasn’t until Nixon resigned that close to a majority wanted him out.

Clearly the American public believe Trump did something wrong in requesting the Ukrainian president to get dirt on a political opponent in return for U.S. military assistance to protect Ukraine from Russian interference. According to CNN, Trump’s numbers are in “unprecedented waters.”
