Judge Orders Lawsuit Against Trump to Go Forward

I signed on to a friend of the court’s brief (amicus brief) in a federal court case filed by current and former members of congress against President Trump for violating the emoluments clause of the U.S. Constitution. The clause was written into the Constitution to assure a president would not engage in business with foreign governments while in office without the consent of congress. There are thirteen former Democratic members of congress and six former Republican members of congress who have joined in this effort.
Trump has maintained his ownership in his businesses including the Trump Hotel down the street from the White House. That hotel, in particular, has hosted foreign embassy events and foreign visiting officials. Trump has not disclosed how much money he has made off these transactions nor has he requested the necessary constitutional approval from congress.
Media reports indicate many foreign dignitaries stay at the hotel and are sure to let Trump know about it in meetings with the president. This is just another example of presidential hypocrisy when it comes to “draining the swamp” of self-serving, self-dealing, financial corruption and making money off the federal government by this administration.
On September 28th a federal judge ruled that we plaintiffs have standing to bring the case, the first ruling in the litigation. It was a win for us, and a loss for President Trump.
The case now continues and I will keep you updated.
