Broomfield and Coleman Unite to Save Our Democracy

On a recent visit to Kansas City, former Democratic Missouri legislator Charlie Broomfield, pictured with me above, organized a community meeting where I spoke about my journey from being the first Republican elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in Clay County to leaving the party and calling for the impeachment of Donald Trump, it’s head.

Charlie vacated his legislative seat in 1972 for an unsuccessful run for the Democratic nomination for congress. I successfully ran in his open seat and was on my way four years later to the U.S. Congress. The attendees included Democratic and Republican officeholders including former Democratic Missouri State Senator Phil Snowden, my opponent for re-election to congress in 1978.

That was then, this is now. All of us are now concerned that we risk losing our democracy.
