Shutting Down the Federal Government for Over 30 Days is Evidence of How Our Political Leaders Have Failed Us

Oval Office Trump PelosiGovernment shutdowns have happened before but never for more that a week or so. Most shutdowns were no longer that the few days it took to arrive at a compromise on how much and on what to spend taxpayer money. In the past, the administration and congressional leaders would thrash out a deal and pass it through the congress and the president would sign it into law.

This January we are once again — as if we are not reminded several times daily — witnessing a dysfunctional presidency and a dysfunctional senate controlled by his party. You know things are pretty much off track when the Majority Leader in the Senate declares he will not bring any resolution to the floor for a vote to end the shutdown that has not previously been approved by the president.

When was Article I of the Constitution replaced with a parliamentary system run by one house of congress? The answer is never! The co-equal legislative branch must stand up to Trump and in doing so stand up for We The People. Failure to do so endangers our national security and turns our civil servants into just unpaid servants whose 800,000 families are being severely impacted along with millions of government contractors who are shut down as well. When members of the FBI announce they have reached the point where they can no longer safeguard the public or our nation if the shutdown continues, then everyone, regardless of political persuasion be it Democrat, Republican, or Independent must demand the shutdown end immediately. Call your senator now!
